What’s the difference between a Tool Training and a Workshop?

Tool Trainings

Generator tool trainings are intended to provide basic skill and safety training on a specific set of tools at Generator. Permission to use tools at Generator is only granted when a member successfully completes each tool training. Some tool trainings are not needed as often and are therefore only run by request. Learn more about these on our Advanced Tool Training page,

NOTE: trainings are not associated with any professional or industry-level certification status, nor is any document issued upon completion.

Non-Members are welcome to take any tool training or class at Generator but will not gain independent access to tools unless they become a Generator member! People must become a Generator member within 3 months of taking a training for the certification to be valid. Members receive a 10% discount on classes, if logged into their member account. Lastly, members gain access to shops and machines once they complete the appropriate trainings.

Workshops

Workshops are longer, hands-on, project-based educational experiences. Participants leave with a finished item or new skill along with the ability to dream up ideas in a new medium, and greater confidence to operate the equipment independently. Most workshops are designed for folks who have little to no previous experience with the equipment used and want to begin growing their skillset, or for folks who simply want to experience making something specific in a supportive atmosphere!
