101 Things I Learned in Fashion School
In this 7 episode series, participants will take a hands-on approach to learning to sew! The series will start with providing a strong foundation in basic skills like learning to thread a sewing machine, understanding seam allowances, testing a variety of stitch styles, and more! Then the series will advance into more complex skills through the assistance of experienced instructors! Participants will have an opportunity to learn on industrial tools like our serger and coverstitch machines!
Throughout 101 Things I Learned in Fashion School, participants will spend a portion of each session working on creating a garment of their choice–button down shirt, skirt, pants, tank top, etc. Our team of instructors will provide tips, tricks, and support as participants navigate creating a design of their own!
This series is intended to be taken together. However, participants are allowed to pick and choose based on interest.
Please note that Episode 1: Learning the Basics is the only workshop that does not require any previous sewing experience. All of the following sessions require the participant to have some prior sewing experience in order to participate. Requirements:
- You must have Generator’s Sewing Certification to take episodes 2-7. If you have already completed the Sewing Tool Training or if you attend episode 1: Learning the Basics, you will be all set.
- 16+, Anyone under 18, requires a parent or guardian to sign a waiver of liability
Materials:
- All materials will be provided for the instructional portion of the episodes.
- Participants will source their own materials for custom piece projects.

Episode 1: Learning the Basics
Tuesday, January 14th, 6-9pm
JUST ADDED: Thursday, January 16th, 6-9pm
In episode one, you will be provided with hands-on instructions on how to operate a household-grade sewing machine. The workshop will cover:

- Identifying parts of the machine
- Winding a bobbin
- Threading the machine
- Changing the needle
- Sewing a variety of stitch types
- Adjusting tension, stitch length/width
- Seam allowance
- Troubleshooting tips
Participants will leave with a canvas tote bag and Generator’s Sewing Shop Certification!

Episode 2: Construction & Design
Tuesday, January 21st, 6-9pm
In episode two, you will ease into the construction and design process. The Instructors will guide you through the design process starting with drawing designs, taking measurements, reading patterns, and constructing garments. During this workshop, we will have hands-on activities to understand the construction process and will provide an opportunity for you to look at sample pieces created by the instructors!

Episode 3: Embellishments & Closures
Tuesday, February 4th, 6-9pm
In episode three, you will explore a variety of stylistic and practical embellishments that can be added to your designs. With the instruction of Lizzie and Lucy, you will practice adding zippers, buttons, pockets, patches, and more to the tote bag you made in episode one! During the last hour of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to add any embellishments or closures to your custom piece. The instructors will float around to help answer any questions and provide additional support.

Episode 4: Industrial Machine & Serger Introduction
Tuesday, February 18th, 6-9pm
In episode 4, you will tackle the industrial sewing machine and serger. Understanding how industrial machines work and when to use them is a great way to elevate your sewing skills. You will have the opportunity to practice running both of these machine under the guidance of the instructor. This session requires more advanced sewing knowledge. Episode 5: Introduction to Technical Fabrics
Tuesday, March 4th, 6-9pm
In episode 5, we invite our guest instructor, Greg, to guide you through the process of working with technical fabrics! You will learn tips working with a unique material as well as gain more confidence working with a sewing machine! At the end of this episode, everyone will leave with two unique handmade wallets and the skills to continue their sewing journey!
This is the perfect introduction to sewing for the outdoors enthusiast who wants to create their own bike bags, fix their gear, make a hammock, and so much more!

Episode 6: Introduction to the Coverstitch
Tuesday, March 18th, 6-9pm
In episode 6, you will be introduced to the coverstitch machine, which is used for creating professional-looking hems, decorative stitching, and top-stitching on garments! Learning to use a coverstitch machine is an important step to growing as a seamstr(ess) and creating professional looking designs. In this skills-based course students will learn how to thread and wait to operate a four cone coverstitch by practicing a number of techniques under the guidance of our instructors! Episode 7: Custom Laser Cut Labels & Finishing Touches
Tuesday, April 8th, 6-9pm
In the final episode, you will learn how you can incorporate other shops at the Generator into your designs! We will be joined by Generator’s tool training instructor, Ethan, who will demonstrate how to create personalized labels, etch patterns in fabric, and cut out patterns using our Laser Cutter! You will have the opportunity to design, etch, and cut out your own clothing label from the laser to add to your finished pieces!
This final lesson is an opportunity to finish off your garments and ask any final questions to our team of instructors!
