Sam Graulty Joins Generator Team To Support and Develop Workshop and Training Programs

Since joining the Generator team back in March, Sam Graulty has been hard at work making sure tool trainings, workshops, experienced user assessments, private lessons, and youth programs run smoothly. Sam came to Generator after a diverse set of experiences working with and on behalf of youth. He’s been a teacher, an outdoor educator, a professional development specialist and much more. He’s also been passionately creating community both professionally and personally.

When the pandemic hit, Sam brought together over 100 friends (and friends of friends) for a weekly online trivia night. “I of course missed my friends, but I also wanted to provide an opportunity for them to connect with each other and to (virtually) meet new people.” Over the course of 20 weeks, Sam hosted over 80 rounds of trivia (with a total of 880 questions!). Thanks to Sam’s community building efforts, good times were had and new friends were made, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sam has been hard at work maintaining and developing programming. Read on to learn more about some of our summer offerings and about how Generator is defining some of the differences between ‘workshops’ and ‘tool trainings’:[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]Workshopstypically product focused, rather than tool-proficiency focused, workshops expose participants to a variety of skills needed to come away from their experience with a specific end product. Below are some exciting new offerings taking place this summer!

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]Tool Trainings – tool trainings provide participants with the level of proficiency needed to safely use the many tools and machines in Generator’s shop spaces and are required prior to using tools and equipment independently. We also offer both Experienced User Assessments and Private Lessons available for request via online form.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]Summer CampsEngaging, week-long programs for kids ages 9-12

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]To ensure that he’s best supporting our community and program participants as we all navigate the re-opening of our post-COVID world, Sam has gone above and beyond to maintain clear communication with the many community members who interface with our programs. In addition to providing general and workshop specific information to participants, Sam has been sending supplemental videos and preparation materials designed to ensure participants feel that Generator is a place where they will be supported and can find community. “I want to be sure people feel as comfortable and prepared as possible before walking through our doors,” said Sam.

We are thrilled that Sam is part of our community and maybe we’ll even get him to host Generator trivia for us someday!

If you have questions about our programs or how to get involved, Sam is always ready to help. He can be reached at: [email protected]

    Welcome, Sam – we’re glad you’re here![/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Our reopening has been wildly successful!

It’s encouraging — and not surprising — to witness Generator volunteers and members get back to work and operate with extra care and caution to keep our shared space as safe as possible.

We’re excited to continue the reopening process! We’ve made some adjustments and additions to our original plans:

    • Masks required in the building at all times
    • Check-in and health screening upon entering
    • 6ft distance required between people
    • Mandatory orientation and VOSHA safety training for all members
    • New membership sign-up process and agreement
    • Reservation of equipment required (more details to follow)
    • No guests
    • No events
    • Members required to clean tools and equipment before and after use
    • No shared kitchen
    • Increased cleaning and sanitation by members, volunteers, staff, and hired cleaning service

    Please note:

    • College Members: At this time, there is no date set for when Champlain Members and UVM Members will be welcomed back to Generator. In the meantime, former members who utilized these two membership programs are welcome to become General Members — please reach out to our Membership & Communications Director to begin the enrollment process.
    • New Member enrollment is TBD. At this time, we’re only accepting new Studio Members (you can apply for a studio space here!). We look forward to welcoming new folks to Generator, and since getting the most value out of your Generator membership requires being trained to use our tools and equipment, we are finalizing our training and class schedule before setting an official date to begin new member enrollment. Stay tuned for an announcement in August!

We are in a time of an overdue awakening. Tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rashard Brooks, and other Black Americans has roused us from complacency. As an organization, we’ve been listening, learning, and engaging in deep reflection as to how Generator will make profound and lasting change that honors and respects Black lives and addresses racism in our communities.

To this end, we are: 1) making racial and social justice a central component of our strategic planning process scheduled to start this fiscal year.  2) providing on-going diversity, equity, and inclusion training for Generator staff, volunteers, instructors, mentors, and board members; 3) launching a BIPOC Scholarship Fund to explicitly provide Black, Indigenous, People of Color access to tools, programs, and services at Generator; 4) establishing an advisory committee dedicated to a transparent process of moving Generator forward with the critical work to counter racism and ensure equal access to opportunities in the sciences, technology, engineering, and arts.

We recognize these actions as the first of many steps our organization will take to be greater advocates and to better serve our members, partners, and community at large. When we make mistakes we will acknowledge them, learn from them, and continue forward with our commitment to change. To this end, we invite your thoughts, questions, and comments.

Standing in solidarity and working to make change,

Meg Hammond, on behalf of the Generator staff & board

Generator and some of their medical, educational, manufacturing, and engineering partners are working to immediately start producing equipment including face shields, N95 masks, and ventilators to protect medical professionals on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jake Blend, Generator’s Rapid Prototyping Shop Manager, is leading the effort to create plastic face shields. Blend is utilizing open source designs from a medical devices group that formed online and surged to over 30,000 members in recent months. Engineers, product designers, materials experts, and medical professionals around the world are editing, prototyping, and testing each other’s designs.

Blend is using Generator’s 3D printers to print the headbands, and Generator’s laser cutters to create the transparent plastic face shield.

“We’re working on acceptance with the hospital, which along with the supply chain is the biggest hurdle right now,” said Blend, “We have runners going up daily to [UVM Medical Center] and getting [the face shields] checked out and inspected.”

As of today, March 26, 2020, Blend is working on version 3 to solve 3D print time issues as well as supporting mass-distribution of his designs to empower those with home printers to support this relief effort.

“This is an extremely organized and collaborative effort,” said Generator Board President Dan Harvey. Board member, Michael Metz, and Operations Director, Elliott Katz, are managing the supply chain of plastics and materials necessary to scale production. Metz and fellow Generator board member, Doug Webster, are creating a state-wide inventory of laser cutters and 3D printers. Other Generator board members and staff have created committees to manage safety, sanitation, distribution, and funding for the initiative.

“The goal is to build a network and launch state-wide production once these designs are approved by medical professionals,” said Metz, who estimated that Generator alone could produce 1,000 face shields based on its own equipment and current material supply. He estimated it would take two weeks to get willing manufacturers around the state in production mode.

Generator is working in partnership with the University of Vermont, Beta Technologies, OVR Technologies, and other Vermont businesses and institutions to create other PPE including N95 masks and ventilators. Several Generator members are also sewing cloth masks for the general public to encourage the donation of N95 masks to medical institutions with greater need.

“Generator is working around the clock to connect the dots in our local, regional, and national community of makers, engineers, and material suppliers in order to meet the demands of this pandemic,” said Executive Director Meg Hammond, “While we had to close the doors to our members, students, and community partners and mentees, this effort allows us to put our tools and expertise to work to protect our community. As an incoming Director, I can’t express how impressed I am with our maker community. More than ever, I see the relevance of Generator.”

    Generator is seeking funding to support the initiative from federal, state, and local resources, as well as private donors and foundations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column centered_text=”true” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]

    Dear Generator Community,

Thank you for staying up-to-date with Generator as we closely monitor our community’s needs in response to COVID-19.

To best support our community by preventing the spread of the virus, Generator is closing its doors immediately and will remain closed through April 6th. This is subject to change as the situation changes moving forward.

Generator’s team of staff, Board of Directors, and I are aware that our shared workspace is a valued resource for our community and that some of our members use this space for their livelihood. We aim to make decisions that keep each of our members and constituents in mind. While it is hard to temporarily close our doors, we are confident that this is our best path forward at this time.

There are likely to be many questions about the impacts of Generator closing, and so we answered some of the questions we anticipate below.

While Generator’s physical space is closed, we look forward to connecting with our community virtually. We have every intention to collaborate in our thinking, to share DIY projects from our home to yours, and to instigate creative solutions to our community’s current and future challenges. We encourage you to engage with us on our social channels and show us what you’re making at home!

    Stay safe and stay connected,

    FAQs

Q: How do I retrieve belongings in my studio/storage space?

A: Please email Elliott Katz at [email protected] to schedule a time for pick up today 3/17/20 or tomorrow 3/18/20.

Q: What about the classes/training/event I’m signed up for?

A: All classes and programming will be postponed until further notice. If you signed up for a class, you will automatically receive credit and will receive information regarding classes in the future. If you have questions regarding classes, please reach out to Sarah Sprague at [email protected]

Q: What do I do about my membership?

A: This is a big one for our members and Generator alike. Generator is a non-profit that operates on a narrow margin. We offer membership as the most affordable price possible, and even then membership fees only cover about 50% of membership-related costs. Despite being closed, we have ongoing expenses. We hope that you’ll consider continuing to support Generator during this extraordinary time by continuing your membership, and we also understand the need to minimize personal expenses. If you need to suspend your membership at this time, please log in to your account at generatorvt.com and change your membership to “Cancel/Hold.”

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy space for our members, class attendees, visitors, and the general public.

We’re writing to update you about the steps our staff is taking to reduce the transmission of illness within our facility and community.

While this situation is ever-evolving, this much is certain: limiting the gathering of confined or large groups in close contact quickly reduces the potential for exponential transmission within a highly cooperative and social community.

As individuals, we each have a responsibility to take actions every day to protect one another — and those in our community who are most at-risk — through social distancing and best practices recommended by the CDC and Vermont Department of Health.

While we are dedicated to providing continued access to Generator — especially for those who make their living here — we are primarily considering our broader community’s safety and health as we make hard decisions impacting Generator’s users.

This is a fluid situation. We will keep our community updated as things change.

    Hours and Staffing Changes

Starting Saturday, March 14th, Generator hours are 12pm to 7pm. All member RFID cards have been programmed to reflect this change. This change will last until further notice.

Champlain Students and UVM Students will not have access to the building until on-campus classes resume.

There will be at least one Generator staff person or volunteer Front Desk Attendant present during open hours. We are reminding members of our buddy system policy while using power tools in the wood and metal shops.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][vc_column_text]

Actions we’re taking in our physical space:

      • Disinfectant spray or wipes are provided in each workshop. We are asking members, instructors, and students to clean equipment both before and after use
      • Our cleaning service is coming to Generator more often and we’ve increased the scope of their work to include high-contact areas such as door handles, work surfaces, keyboards and mouses, and the shared kitchen
      • We are developing a new cleaning schedule for our staff and Front Desk Attendants to follow, ensuring that that critical spaces and surfaces are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis
      • We are working with our studio members to institute best practices in their semi-private studio spaces
      • We are asking members to bring their own safety glasses, hearing protection, and other safety gear to Generator. For those using shared safety glasses, there are storage bins labeled “cleaned” and “used,” and used safety glasses will be sanitized regularly.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][vc_column_text]

How we’re managing classes and events:

Events of 10 or more people are canceled through April 3rd.

Tours and orientations are also canceled through April 3rd.

Most of our classes and events are small — three to six people — and so we will continue to run them while increasing hand-washing and maintaining 6 feet of distance between one another when possible.

We are asking instructors, students, and everyone at Generator to stay home if they feel ill, if they have potentially come into contact with someone who is ill, if they frequently interact with high-risk individuals, or if they are at all concerned.

We are offering credit towards future classes for people who are currently enrolled in upcoming classes but are not comfortable attending.

Our flexible cancellation policy for classes is unchanged: cancel 48 hours or more before your class and you’ll be eligible for a full refund.

Email Sarah at [email protected] to inquire about class credit or cancellation.
