  • Zach Harmon: Maker-in-Residence August/September 2016

I often hear that the sole purpose of drums is to keep a steady beat for the band. I disagree. I began playing piano at age 3 and switched to the drum set at age 15. Ever since making the switch, one of my main pursuits has been to apply the melodic and harmonic sensibilities of the piano to the drum set. Despite years of exploring the melodic potential of instruments such as tabla, congas, and batá, I was still dissatisfied with the melodies I was able to create on drum set. Until now.

    -Zach Harmon

Zach Harmon started his residency in August and got connected with Gregory Givens to help with the engineering challenges in his pursuit for an elite and unique drum. Zach designed a drum set that combined the physical act of drumming with the piano’s ability to create chords and melodies.  The foot pedals have been altered to be electronic control mechanisms. By pressing the foot pedals while striking the instrument, the performer can alter the pitch of each drum.

The design borrows from many fields of technology, some being outside Zach’s expertise. With the help of the Generator community, he was able to create a prototype.

There will also be an interface for programming tuning presets: pressing a button on this interface will automatically reposition the mechanisms in the drums to a higher or lower range of pitch, which will greatly expand the melodic capability. In addition to being a valuable teaching tool for ear-training, composition, and intonation, this instrument will enable drummers to be heard as more than just timekeepers—as equals in harmonic accompaniment. Melodic soloists. Leaders.

  • Thank You for Your Support

    Thank You for Your Support

    Hey everybody,

Holy smokes: we did it! YOU did it! You helped Generator hit our challenge goal of $5,000 in 10 short days. Here are the final numbers:
$5,900 in 10 days, from 76 unique contributors – from Washington (DC) to Waterbury, Shelburne to Sherman Oaks (CA). Just terrific, thank you! We had an average contribution of $80 (which is huge!) with a range of $5 to $1,000.
One of the things that made this campaign so rewarding was the opportunity to read first-hand what folks had to say about YOU. Here’s what I saw along the way:
    “Keep up the great work!!”

“We’re excited to see the Generator grow as a result of the dedication and passion of the vibrant maker community here in Vermont. “

“Good Luck. Very proud of you [name]!”

    “Best of luck”

    “Rock and Roll!”

“I know it’s only a token donation, but it will be matched & should cover at least a stapler. I’ll share this on FB too :)”

    “LOVE GENERATOR!”

“Looking forward to the new space – hoping for access for youth too!”

    “Keep on Generating! “

    “Let’s make this happen!!!!”

“I like to move it, move it!”

“Great appreciation for an the amazing team of people – staff, members and board who push the rock a little higher every day.  Here’s to the summit.”

    “Go Generator!”

    “ON THE MOVE “

    “<3”

“Congratulations on your successful campaign and impending move!”

“Since you’ve made the mark, this is for some beers – just joking –  it’s for a new mop bucket.”

Thanks everyone – this was really fun. I’m humbled and deeply grateful for your support and capacity to generate such momentum.
Of course, there are so many ways community spirit is demonstrated at Generator beyond the money. This is clear. It is impressive to see it crystalize so measurably in such a short time. So thank you again, and here’s to Sears Lane!
    Sincerely,
    Generator Team

    Meet Max Keeling

Max Keeling has been Generator’s VIP Machine Shop Head from September 2015 to September 2016. His training was well aligned for Generator as a mechanical engineer. He worked in design engineering of industrial equipment- things like air filtration machines for wood heat and power plants, water screens for fish hatcheries, and other special purpose machines.

He found Generator very intentionally before he moved to Burlington. The concept of a makerspace was no stranger, having been a member of a makerspace in Ann Arbor, Michigan before he moved. Coincidentally, he also wound up living in an apartment in Burlington right near Matt and Erik (of M//E Design), and they encouraged him to get involved right away.

To Max, the best part about being part of Generator was all the people he met, and the wide range of talents everyone possessed.

I have been doing freelance mechanical design work, and having a place to

go besides a home office has been really nice. Aside from the social aspect,

I’ve gotten the chance to get involved with other people’s projects around

the Generator and I’ve learned a lot in the process. Teaching the machine

shop classes has been a new experience for me as well, and I have enjoyed

    that.

The Generator also facilitated the continued exploration of a woodworking tool idea that Max had. He speculates that he would not have been able to move the design along without access to the space and tools at Generator. Advice and help from Generator members, especially Steve Conant (a Generator board member), was pivotal. Max is currently completing a patent for the tool with Justin McCabe, (another Board Member), and will eventually commercialize the invention.

Max will be missed at Generator as he embarks on his next adventure with his wife in Buffalo, NY. His next chapter is joining a small machining equipment company in the area, as a design engineer.

Max Keeling is one of Generator’s top talent and has participated in “a rising tide lifts all boats culture. Generator is a platform to help people make better and to get to their next stepping stone!

Meet Iona Fox: Generator June/July 2016 Maker in Residence

Iona Fox heard about the Maker-in-Residency through her partner Rob Rock, one of Generator’s long term members and farm tool inventor. Her endeavor to learn how to use the laser cutter was geared towards bringing a new dimension to her book covers; by end of two months she had three well crafted specimens.

I think I will use the laser a lot more in the future!

                                                                 -Iona Fox

Iona has established forward momentum and is finding her work well in demand. Post her residency, she starts a comic strip for Seven Days in September 2016. One of her big challenges is scaling up and how to keep books stocked.  Iona is confident that the solution can be found through the collective knowledge shared at Generator.

After getting to know the characters at Generator, you have a better sense of who you can ask to help you with each challenge.

                                                                 -Iona Fox

She has her eyes set on printing a solid run on a new book.

It would be nice to do it here(at Generator). I might make the equipment that I need,

which is only possible with time and help from members.

                                                                 -Iona Fox
The Maker-in-Residence Program supplied the time and space that Iona needed. Having the ability to come and go in and out of focus on her work without stress was key to her success.

  • Sears Lane Relocation FAQ

    Sears Lane Relocation FAQ

    Why is Generator moving?

Memorial Auditorium will close to the public at the end of this year; the building is potentially unsound structurally and is likely to undergo extensive renovations. Generator has had a two-year Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Burlington Parks and Recreation department that outlined a December 31, 2016 timeline for occupancy.  The City has been clear, transparent and cooperative in their planning about the future of the building and Generator has had time to prepare our relocation plan.

    Where will Generator move?

Generator has signed a term sheet with Champlain College to lease space for  three to eight years in a warehouse located at 40 Sears Lane.  It is disappointing that Memorial must close, and Generator will miss the advantages of a direct partnership with the City as well as a central location. We are excited about our move to the South End Arts District, which will place us in the thick of Burlington’s creative community of entrepreneurs and artists.

What will Generator’s new home be like?

Generator will lease 8,540 sf. of a warehouse space behind Burlington Furniture Factory and just across the parking lot from Champlain’s Miller Center (where their makerlab is located). In many ways, Generator will be familiar: twenty two 8′ x 10′ studios sited around our workshops – machine, woodworking, jewelry, rapid prototyping, microelectronics and computer lab. Proposed upgrades will include a large assembly area, paint booth, enclosed classroom, kitchen and shower.

How will this move be paid for?

Generator’s board has established a capital campaign helmed by founding board chair Michael Metz and supported by Steve Conant, John Cohn, and Lars Torres. The target for this campaign is $300,000. Champlain College has committed to supporting upgrades to the building envelope including roof repair, entrances, an accessible ramp and basic services such as bathrooms. As of July 28, the campaign has reached two thirds of its goal. You can support the campaign by writing to [email protected].

What is the timeline for Generator’s move?

In December Generator will close for 30 days to relocate to 40 Sears Lane.  Between now and then, several milestones must be met, including permitting by August 15; basic envelope upgrades by September 30; electrical, mechanical, and shop buildouts by November 30; studios build and move completed by December 31. We expect to be open January 2.

Who have been Generator’s partners during Generator’s time at Memorial?

Generator’s startup  phase would not have been possible without the generous support of numerous institutional and individual champions.  Among our longest-standing allies have been the City of Burlington, Parks and Recreation, Burlington City Arts, Burlington Telecom, the University of Vermont, and Champlain College. We are grateful for every ounce of time, talent and treasure poured into this effort over the years, not least by our board, staff, volunteers, and members.
