    Seeing Sound Opening Reception

    Devin Wilder
    Thursday, February 4
    6-8pm

Seeing Sound is an interactive sonic installation that uses home-brewed electronics to reintroduce the ways in which we experience sound. Born from the intersection of art and technology, Seeing Sound features Arduino-based Theremins that emit tones relative to the movement of its viewer’s hand. Being linked electronically to both an analogue Cymatic rig and a Raspberry Pi, the Theremins are then able produce visualizations of these sounds as they are created in real time. Challenging the notion that one can only experience sound by hearing it, these devices make sound accessible to those who are not able to interact with it through such traditional means.

The first in an oncoming series of installations, demonstrations, and performances, Seeing Sound is the brief introduction to what will be called The Right to Sound Project: a social justice movement that uses visual art and technology to raise awareness about the hearing impaired community and the fact that insurance companies do not assist in covering the cost of any hearing aids, regardless of the severity of one’s disability. By using vibration and frequency in conjunction with these specifically engineered apparatuses, Seeing Sound and the Right to Sound Project aims to reintroduce sound as a visual experience, draw public attention to this great injustice, and hopefully, bring about the change needed to correct it.

Program will help students gain experience in STEM fields

Burlington, Vt. — The Community College of Vermont (CCV) is partnering with the Burlington Generator to introduce students to the maker and entrepreneurial communities in the Burlington area. The project is designed to help CCV students gain experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, which are increasingly valued by Vermont employers. This collaboration will be funded by an $18,150 gift from a local Vermont donor.

The first phase of the partnership will consist of two CCV faculty members spending time at the Generator, and developing proposals for classes they will teach there during fall 2016. Faculty will present their proposals at brown bag lunches at both CCV and the Generator, and eventually at the CCV faculty summer institute.

“Generator is thrilled to welcome the Community College of Vermont into an emerging intercollegiate consortium focused around innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Generator Executive Director Lars Hasselblad Torres. “In addition to serving CCV students, faculty and staff with access to great tools, talent, and learning opportunities, we are keen to learn how, as the nexus of a new kind of intercollegiate partnership, we can feed Burlington’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem together, inspiring and sustaining the next generation of makers.”

CCV will conduct a student survey before the end of the month to gauge interest in the program and raise awareness of student opportunities at the Generator. Between January and May, CCV students are encouraged to apply to become members of the Generator for five months.

“Companies that require employees with STEM backgrounds are becoming more and more central to Vermont’s economy, and this partnership will help contribute to our state’s workforce and economic future,” said CCV President Joyce Judy. “We’re excited to collaborate with the Burlington Generator to offer our faculty and students the opportunity to be exposed to cutting-edge technology and local entrepreneurs.  This program will help many CCV students fully appreciate the wide range of possibilities for their future careers.”

The Generator will be hosting a mixer on Thursday, February 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for CCV students to visit the space and learn more about upcoming programs.

CCV has a long-standing commitment to STEM education, and recently added a STEM Studies certificate to its offerings for students.

CCV is Vermont’s second largest college, serving over 7,000 students each semester. With 12 locations and extensive online learning options, our students don’t have to travel far from their communities to access our 18 degree and seven certificate programs, workforce, secondary and continuing education opportunities, and academic and veterans support services.

Generator aims to be a community of collaboration among artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to foster a fertile environment for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. We exist at the intersection of art and technology and offer our community a full suite of tools, workspaces, and education opportunities. We serve and celebrate creators, collaborators and entrepreneurs.

    Event Description

Exploring the intersection of ideology and entertainment, Paolo’s work calls for the radicalization of popular culture through the re-appropriation of video games – as both art, activist expression and meaningful interaction. Agitprop or conscience? Co-optation or a perfect marriage?

One of perhaps a few artists with a five-year plan, Paolo’s work explores the future of local play, behavior within complex systems, the margins of industry, and challenges to conventional entrypoints of game play. Informed by movements from Marxism to the Zapatistas and tackling some of the wicked issues of our time – from gun violence to mineral sourcing to labor – Paolo’s work shares the maker movement’s commitments to appropriation, concepts of fairness and justness, creativity and play. Learn more about – and download – some of his games in advance at molleindustria.org.

Paolo was born in 1981 somewhere in Northern Italy and is currently based in Pittsburgh after surviving in Milan, studying in Troy, NY and lounging around in Brooklyn. Currently an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Paolo is an artist / game designer usually working under the project name Molleindustria.

BIG Maker is presented with support from the City of Burlington, Champlain College Center for Communication and Creative Media, Burlington City Arts, Burlington Telecom, The Moran Plant, Designbook, and Hotel Vermont.

Opportunity for Generator Members to get in the spotlight!

    The YWP Generator Project
Young Writers Project, a Burlington-based nonprofit that helps thousands of youths each year improve their writing and digital media skills, is guiding a group of youths who want to put together digital stoires about The Generator and its members. YWP Director Geoffrey Gevalt and Publications Coordinator Susan Reid, both former journalists, will be guiding the group to producing various types of stories ranging from digital photo stories — photos and sound — to full written stories with photos or digital stories with images, sound, words and even video. The youths are extremely motivated and talented and were treated to a wonderful tour by Jeme last Saturday so they have a keen interest in getting to know more about all the work that is done at The Generator.Geoff and Susan will be arranging visits to The Generator during mostly Saturdays in January, February and March and would love to set up interviews with individual Generator members at each visit. If you are interested in being interviewed, please contact Geoff and/or Susan of the YWP and tell them what you do and how to contact you — email and phone would be great. They will be in touch. Their contact info: ggevalt@youngwritersproject.org or 802-324-9537 and [email protected] or 802-324-9539.

The group’s next visit is Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  They also will be at the Third Thursday session on January 21.

All finished stories will be posted in youngwritersproject.org and many will also be published in YWP’s media partners (on a platform specific basis) and will be available for The Generator and individual members to republish or link to.
