    Staff Spotlight: Alex Hahl

This week are getting to know Generator’s Operations and Safety technician Alex Hahl!  A freelance maker and teacher who specializes in metal fabrication, Alex grew up in the idyllic suburbs of northern Virginia and went on to get a degree in geography from the University of Kansas. After a subsequent career as a pizza artist, he hit the road and found himself working as a commercial fisherman on the coast of Maine. Now in Burlington, Generator is where Alex spends most of his time. His goal in life is to learn how to do everything, or at least everything that interests him.

    Current Home Location?
    Burlington

    Hometown/Birthplace?
I grew up in Falls Church, Virginia

What is your job title at Generator, and what do you do?
My title is “Operations and Safety Technician.” I usually tell people that my job is fixing tools and teaching people how to use them.

How did you first discover Generator, and how did you end up working here?
I first arrived looking to make jewelry, and then I started learning all the other tools. Every time there was a chance to increase my involvement at Generator I took it. I’ve been the metal shop lead, member representative to the board, guy who puts up posters for events, and many other things. Then one day I woke up and it was my full-time job.

When you’re at Generator, what brings you joy? Why?
Being able to improvise something quickly with our tools that solves a problem. I also enjoy seeing the members feeling at home in the place, just hanging out.

What’s one rewarding/fulfilling aspect of working at Generator you either didn’t expect, or didn’t know would be part of your job?
Hearing about the lives of the people who show up here. Many of them are in transitional moments and have interesting stories.

What’s one aspect of your job you wish you could do more of?
I really enjoy teaching, but it takes a lot of time and energy.

If you didn’t work at Generator, what would you be doing right now?
Running a used bookstore in a sleepy beach town. The woman who owns the pub across the street visits from time to time, but something about her says she has a dark past, so I keep my distance.

If you had 2 weeks to do whatever you wanted to do, and all the money you needed to do it… What would IT be?
Visiting uninhabited islands by sailboat. Possibly looking for pirate treasure along the way.

What projects have you been working on in the space or in the past? How has that been fulfilling you for?
I’m currently working on a couple of large public sculptures with the artist Clay Mohrman. In the past I’ve used Generator to make many things, from a shovel, to film festival award statues and drinking troughs for crickets.

How has Generator been a part of your personal journey as a creator/maker? Have you seen any growth since the start of your time up until now?
Generator has absolutely been the most important place in my career for me to learn new skills and find new projects. It also has given me the opportunity to learn and practice teaching as I pass on the skills I’ve gained here.

Here at Generator our mission is more or less to help people make stuff. What is it about making something that is so important, and why should other people care?
The outsourcing of America’s industrial capabilities to countries with lower wages and environment/labor standards has created a situation where most people don’t know how to produce or repair the things they use in their daily lives. In the event that the US dollar loses its status as world reserve currency, we’re all going to be in a lot of trouble if we don’t know how to do anything other than write emails.

Thank you Alex… and thank you to Susan Le! Susan is a student at Middlebury College who spent the summer interning here at Generator. In addition to producing this article with Alex, Susan also helped out and support our youth summer camps, worked on a number of fabrication projects, and helped to document the building of a large member project. We were really fortunate to get to work with Susan this summer and wish her well in the future!

  • ‘Open Studio’ Coming to Generator

    ‘Open Studio’ Coming to Generator

At Generator, we pride ourselves on removing as many barriers as possible in providing access to our diverse array of tools. After completing the requisite tool training, members are able to have full access to our shops. Many people prefer to learn on their own, through trial and error. This is part of the essence of a maker space and we LOVE this process. Others prefer having someone to double-check a procedure with or ask a quick question of. This type of support and teamwork often happens organically at Generator, but we wanted to create a more formal opportunity where members knew a skilled-user would be in a specific shop space and open to consultation.

That’s why we have decided to begin offering periodic “Open Studio” time for members. These monthly, free offerings will be staffed by our Volunteer Shop Leads. They will provide an opportunity for members to show up with their own projects and do work together with one another as well as the shop lead. Informal consultation and education will be the name of the game. We want to provide an opportunity where folks can bridge the confidence gap between having the knowledge how a tool works and having enough experience to use it fully independently.

This time isn’t just for folks who recently completed a tool training. Experienced members and folks who have yet to complete a shop’s tool training are encouraged to attend as well! Not only will more experienced members have an opportunity to consult with knowledgeable folks, their questions, perspectives and experience will prove valuable to others as well.

To learn when the next ‘Open Studio’ sessions are, head over to our Events Calendar and if you have questions check out the FAQ below or reach out to Sam Graulty, the Program Coordinator at [email protected].

    FAQs:

    • What if I can’t make the scheduled time?
      • Unfortunately, the sessions’ timing is determined by the leaders’ availability. You can contact the Program Coordinator ([email protected]) and it may be possible to find other times for future dates.
    • Do I have to preregister?
      • While not strictly required, we do ask people to register via the calendar event on our Events page. This not only helps the leader know who’s coming and what they want, it also helps Generator track how many people are attending which offerings.
    • What will we actually do?
      • There are a few options of what may happen. It’s somewhat up to the leader, but they’re of course open to suggestions. Some possible activities include:
        • Skill sharing – Learn a specific technique
        • Consultation – Get support on a specific project or conundrum
        • Continuing Education – Delve deeper into how to use the tools
        • Social Connection – Get to know your fellow makers while you both work in parallel
    • What’s the difference between these and Private Lessons?
      • Private lessons are individualized and exclusive to the person who requests and pays for them. Because this is shared time, everyone must be sure to work cooperatively to share the time evenly.
    • Who can come?
      • To begin, Open Studio will be limited only to Generator members. However, members do NOT need to be certified in a shop to attend. This is a way to ensure a wide array of backgrounds and experience-levels. Because the shop leads will be present, non-certified members may even be able to try out some tools under direct supervision. Note: this will NOT take the place of a Tool Training. UPDATE: Open Studio is now open to non-members as of June 14th 2022.
    • What if it’s crowded?
      • We won’t limit the number of people to start. It’s up to the leader and the attendees to be sure to share the time as best they can. If attendance limits would make sense given how popular they are, we may institute limits in the future.
    • Can’t I just get together with other members to talk about our work?
      • Of course you can! We just wanted to provide a more structured environment where members can know there will be experienced users present who are willing and able to share their knowledge.

Our reopening has been wildly successful!

It’s encouraging — and not surprising — to witness Generator volunteers and members get back to work and operate with extra care and caution to keep our shared space as safe as possible.

We’re excited to continue the reopening process! We’ve made some adjustments and additions to our original plans:

    [/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][image_with_animation image_url=”9904″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]All phases will include the following:

    • Masks required in the building at all times
    • Check-in and health screening upon entering
    • 6ft distance required between people
    • Mandatory orientation and VOSHA safety training for all members
    • New membership sign-up process and agreement
    • Reservation of equipment required (more details to follow)
    • No guests
    • No events
    • Members required to clean tools and equipment before and after use
    • No shared kitchen
    • Increased cleaning and sanitation by members, volunteers, staff, and hired cleaning service

    Please note:

    • College Members: At this time, there is no date set for when Champlain Members and UVM Members will be welcomed back to Generator. In the meantime, former members who utilized these two membership programs are welcome to become General Members — please reach out to our Membership & Communications Director to begin the enrollment process.
    • New Member enrollment is TBD. At this time, we’re only accepting new Studio Members (you can apply for a studio space here!). We look forward to welcoming new folks to Generator, and since getting the most value out of your Generator membership requires being trained to use our tools and equipment, we are finalizing our training and class schedule before setting an official date to begin new member enrollment. Stay tuned for an announcement in August!

We are in a time of an overdue awakening. Tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rashard Brooks, and other Black Americans has roused us from complacency. As an organization, we’ve been listening, learning, and engaging in deep reflection as to how Generator will make profound and lasting change that honors and respects Black lives and addresses racism in our communities.

To this end, we are: 1) making racial and social justice a central component of our strategic planning process scheduled to start this fiscal year.  2) providing on-going diversity, equity, and inclusion training for Generator staff, volunteers, instructors, mentors, and board members; 3) launching a BIPOC Scholarship Fund to explicitly provide Black, Indigenous, People of Color access to tools, programs, and services at Generator; 4) establishing an advisory committee dedicated to a transparent process of moving Generator forward with the critical work to counter racism and ensure equal access to opportunities in the sciences, technology, engineering, and arts.

We recognize these actions as the first of many steps our organization will take to be greater advocates and to better serve our members, partners, and community at large. When we make mistakes we will acknowledge them, learn from them, and continue forward with our commitment to change. To this end, we invite your thoughts, questions, and comments.

Standing in solidarity and working to make change,

Meg Hammond, on behalf of the Generator staff & board

Eva talked to a number of Vermont’s essential workers this week including Kristin Baker, a Nurse Manager in UVM Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

“I did a story on Generator, who made these face shields…” Eva says, “I don’t know if you’ve come into contact with them. Have you seen them out?”

“Yes, we just got them!” Kristin replies. “So these new ones that came in… they wipe down every single aspect. It’s a much more sturdy shield. And so far the staff love it. I think it’s also really cool that is was made locally. There’s also that sense of Vermont pride.”

    • As of Friday 4/17, Generator has built and packaged a total of 2,200 face shields. Soon, much larger manufacturers around Vermont will able to build far more face shields per week than our small-yet-powerful “boutique” factory can. We’re proud to have responded so quickly and to continue producing PPE while larger-scale operations ramp up.

    • We are currently fulfilling an order from the State of Vermont for 4,000 face shields. On Friday 4/17  we sent the first batch of 900 shields to the State.

     [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

    • Thanks to generous donations from over 110 individuals over the past few weeks, Generator has donated 45 face shields to smaller organizations including:
      • Addison County Home Hospice Center
      • Anew Place
      • Birth Wife Midwifery
      • Spectrum

    • We’ve built 35 intubation boxes. With the support of a few anonymous donors, Generator was able to donate many of the intubation boxes to Vermont hospitals. Elliott is working on version 2.0 of our intubation box in response to feedback from emergency doctors at UVMMC. The new design is easier for doctors to use and clean, and it accommodates more body sizes and bed sizes.

    • Our production team has grown thanks to collaboration with ECHO, the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain! Caroline Frigon, ECHO Education Coordinator, and Nina Ridhibhinyo, ECHO Education Director, pivoted from their usual work at ECHO to join our production team. We’re working hard to meet demand and we couldn’t do it without these two, or without this kind of community generosity and collaboration.

Generator and some of their medical, educational, manufacturing, and engineering partners are working to immediately start producing equipment including face shields, N95 masks, and ventilators to protect medical professionals on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jake Blend, Generator’s Rapid Prototyping Shop Manager, is leading the effort to create plastic face shields. Blend is utilizing open source designs from a medical devices group that formed online and surged to over 30,000 members in recent months. Engineers, product designers, materials experts, and medical professionals around the world are editing, prototyping, and testing each other’s designs.

Blend is using Generator’s 3D printers to print the headbands, and Generator’s laser cutters to create the transparent plastic face shield.

“We’re working on acceptance with the hospital, which along with the supply chain is the biggest hurdle right now,” said Blend, “We have runners going up daily to [UVM Medical Center] and getting [the face shields] checked out and inspected.”

As of today, March 26, 2020, Blend is working on version 3 to solve 3D print time issues as well as supporting mass-distribution of his designs to empower those with home printers to support this relief effort.

“This is an extremely organized and collaborative effort,” said Generator Board President Dan Harvey. Board member, Michael Metz, and Operations Director, Elliott Katz, are managing the supply chain of plastics and materials necessary to scale production. Metz and fellow Generator board member, Doug Webster, are creating a state-wide inventory of laser cutters and 3D printers. Other Generator board members and staff have created committees to manage safety, sanitation, distribution, and funding for the initiative.

“The goal is to build a network and launch state-wide production once these designs are approved by medical professionals,” said Metz, who estimated that Generator alone could produce 1,000 face shields based on its own equipment and current material supply. He estimated it would take two weeks to get willing manufacturers around the state in production mode.

Generator is working in partnership with the University of Vermont, Beta Technologies, OVR Technologies, and other Vermont businesses and institutions to create other PPE including N95 masks and ventilators. Several Generator members are also sewing cloth masks for the general public to encourage the donation of N95 masks to medical institutions with greater need.

“Generator is working around the clock to connect the dots in our local, regional, and national community of makers, engineers, and material suppliers in order to meet the demands of this pandemic,” said Executive Director Meg Hammond, “While we had to close the doors to our members, students, and community partners and mentees, this effort allows us to put our tools and expertise to work to protect our community. As an incoming Director, I can’t express how impressed I am with our maker community. More than ever, I see the relevance of Generator.”

    Generator is seeking funding to support the initiative from federal, state, and local resources, as well as private donors and foundations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column centered_text=”true” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]

It is a great honor to start the new year serving as Generator’s new Executive Director. I am grateful for the warm welcome into this community of makers! I am especially thankful to be joining such a fantastic team who has been working hard throughout this transition to serve our members, partners, and guests.

I spent the past eight years at Goddard College as Director of Development and the Haybarn Theatre Event Producer. Prior to this, I cultivated my event and business management skills as a founding member of the collectively owned Langdon Street Cafe–an arts and music venue in Montpelier.

In 2015, my life partner Ben t. Matchstick became a member at Generator where he launched his business, PinBox 3000. Through this experience, I learned first-hand about the profound impact Generator has in support of artists, inventors, and entrepreneurs.  I look forward to many more collaborative efforts supporting creatives while advancing Vermont’s economic development.

While our mission drives the direction of my work, the community we serve brings my efforts alive. I am committed to helping our members, partners, and the community-at-large enjoy hands-on, experiential learning, prototype products, tinker, collaborate, and dream of solutions to local national, and global concerns.

My door is open, please stop by to say hello. I look forward to envisioning the future of Generator with you.

    Sincerely,

    Meg Hammond
