    Creating Autonomous Yet Safe Robots
    February 28th – Josh Bongard
    7:00PM, 40 Sears Lane, Burlington

The robot revolution is upon us: autonomous cars are almost ready to drive our streets and drones are almost ready to deliver packages to our doorstep. How do we ensure that these machines are still free to make decisions as they navigate our world but not harm people in the process?Reckless Ideas speaker, Josh Bongard, is the Director of the Morphology, Evolution & Computation Lab at UVM.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][nectar_btn size=”small” button_style=”regular” button_color_2=”Accent-Color” icon_family=”none” url=”https://www.sevendaystickets.com/events/51632288/creating-autonomous-yet-safe-robots” text=”RSVP HERE”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][vc_column_text]March 28, 2018 – Laurent Hébert-Dufresne

Spread of Viruses and Ideas in the Age of Echo Chambers.

With the advent of the new science of networks, we now know how unequal and segregated our social networks are. This lecture will introduce this new science as well as two concrete examples. In the physical world, understanding social networks change how we fight diseases. In the virtual world, it highlights the feedback loop between the spread of new ideas and how we choose to interact; often leading to closed echo chambers and less dialogue.  Laurent Hébert-Dufresne

Is an Assistant Professor of computer science at UVM

    April 25 – Jenny Bower

The Mineralogy of Pipe Organs: Science, Sound Art, and Aging Instruments

After two thousand years as the Western “king of instruments,” the popularity of pipe organs is waning. With connections to early environmental health risks, the ivory trade, colonialism, and industrialization, the organ represents the quintessential machine of the Anthropocene. In this lecture we will engage the complex history of the organ through a material investigation of its component parts, using mineralogy, historical science, and biology as tools. Special emphasis on Vermont’s own local organ history will be woven throughout the talk.

    May 30- John Cohn

Digital Disruption and the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is changing the world and causing Digital Disruption particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. In this talk John Cohn will relate some fun and (hopefully) useful insights how these same concepts of disruption can help us manage our own lives and careers.  Dr. John Cohn is an IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist for IBM’s Watson Internet of Things Division.

Each Jump/Start Entrepreneur receives $1000 in cash, and over $4500 worth of in-kind services including 24/7 access to Generator’s high-tech fabrication facilities, classes and expert consultations. Chosen from 26 applications by the Jump/Start selection committee the goal of the Jump/Start program is to help them successfully bring their innovative product ideas to market.

The Jump/Start entrepreneurship residency is centered around a unique six-part lecture/workshop curriculum developed by LaunchVT and presented by local area business experts. The lectures are free and open to the public, and present a full review of how to start a business from Market Analysis and Intellectual Property Protection to Brand Development and Financing. The lecture series begins on January 11, 5pm at Generator.

    The JumpStart Entrepreneurs are:

    • Courtney Reckord – data-driven jewelry designs created from USGS topographical renderings of iconic landscapes.
    • Jake Blend – classic video arcade machines replicated in reduced sizes, featuring over 100 fully playable video games.
    • Clay Mohrman – interior lighting designs combining natural found elements with LED technology in unique sculptural forms
    • Christine Hill – Jewelry created from up-cycled, stainless steel bicycle parts including spokes and chains

“Jump/Start is designed to give super early-stage entrepreneurs with outstanding product ideas the support they need to bring their products to market and grow their businesses here in Vermont.” said Generator Executive Director Chris Thompson.  “We’re very excited to see such highly innovative products ideas in our first cohort of Jump/Start entrepreneurs. We highly encourage anyone who is interested in starting a business to attend the lecture series and learn along side our residents the essential elements of creating a successful business.”

At the end of the 12 week program Jump/Start entrepreneurs will present their business plans and products. They will leave with a detailed analysis of their business that they can use to apply for LaunchVT’s early stage acceleration program or other funding opportunities—all with no strings attached. Unlike many national entrepreneurial incubators, Jump/Start takes no equity in the chosen ventures.

Two years later, in November 2017, they returned as a second-time resident with new problems regarding the functionality of their newly obtained prosthetic. Upon receiving the BAHA 5 (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid), Alejandro-Wilder realized that the side effects they had been experiencing with the device that they had paid 5000 dollars out of pocket for, were largely due to basic design flaws. In the spirit of maker-culture, they then decided to sidestep the engineers at Cochlear by using cutting-edge Rapid Prototyping 3d scan and print technology as well as Generator’s multi-tiered system of designers and fabricators to build modifications that would not only solve these problems but improve functionality.

Two months later, with this support, they were able to design a 3d printed model of a functional case for the prosthetic, as well as a conceptual design for an industrial version that would incorporate Teflon and rubber light resin all while doing independent scholarly research and public outreach to find ways to speak out on these issues. It is their hope that in releasing these designs and advancing their involvement with local organizations for people with disabilities as a community scholar, that that they will be able to use their knowledge of healthcare legislature and reform to push public discourse on these issues so that pertinent changes in political policy will occur.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][nectar_btn size=”small” open_new_tab=”true” button_style=”regular” button_color_2=”Accent-Color” icon_family=”none” url=”https://www.devinalejandrowilder.com/” text=”Devin Alejandro Wilder”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Instructor: Christine Hammer – Center for Women & Enterprise Vermont | Hammer Consulting

Every startup begins with an idea and a passion. But, just because you love your product or service doesn’t mean that others will and when it comes to success in business, it’s all about the customer. Some basic keys to starting a successful business are identifying who wants what you’re selling, will they pay for it, what you need to do to stand out from others in the marketplace, and studying potential competitors. We’ll explore these issues to get you on your way to formulating an effective business plan.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Instructor: Justin McCabe – Dunkiel, Saunders, Elliott, Raubvogel & Hand

Intellectual property (IP) can give your business a leg up on your competition, focus your research, give your investors confidence, and protect your business assets; however, it takes planning and nurturing throughout the business development process. This session will provide an overview of the different types of IP, how to acquire and protect your IP, and, most importantly, discuss pitfalls that entrepreneurs encounter (e.g., pitch contests, taking to investors, waiting to consider IP protection). The session will also touch on the pros and cons of incorporating and when it may be a good idea for your new business.

05  How will people know about it? | Brand Development

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Instructors: Michael Jager – Solidarity of Unbridled Labor

For entrepreneurial thinkers and makers, a great idea, product, or service is not enough to build your idea’s true potential. Your ability to capture, communicate, and create and refine your cultural relevance in people’s lives is essential. This is the practice of a Living Brand. It’s about strategic thinking and design and how to practice and apply it in oneness with your idea – because an idea that is not in motion, learning, and relevant is no idea at all. We will review what a brand is and why it matters and dig into the process, practice, and some cases of Living Brand work in action. Resources and reading materials for creating, clarifying, communicating, and cultivating your idea will be shared.

The business of art making isn’t about just, well, making art. It’s no different in the world of comics. If you create a comic book, for instance, where should you publish it? Which comics convention should you attend to market it? Is the whole endeavor worth your time?

Vermont cartoonist Stephanie Zuppo, 27, seeks to answer these questions and others. (The artist goes by gender-neutral they/them pronouns.) In February, they launched The Ladybroad Ledger, the first all-femme and nonbinary newsprint comic, and distributed the free publication at sites around Vermont.

With their husband, Zuppo also created a website called Conosaurus as a resource for cartoonists, other creatives and fans to manage convention schedules. It provides access to a database of information on comics events throughout the United States and Canada.

Zuppo, an MFA graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, works in a studio in Generator maker space in Burlington. Seven Dayscaught up with them to hear more about their work, successes and challenges.
