Generator, Burlington’s new maker space, is a combination of artist studio, classroom, and business incubator focused on the act of making things. Generator exists at the intersection of art, science and technology and as such creates a community of collaboration between artists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and artisans.  Makers of all kinds, novice or professional, can sign-up for membership, rent a studio space, or take a class.  Generator’s objective is to foster a hybrid hive of activity that creates a fertile environment for innovation, creativity and idea fulfillment.

  • Seven Days: Generator Maker Space to Open This Month

One Saturday in February, eight volunteer builders and painters gathered in Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium Annex with a mission: to transform the high-ceilinged, 5,000-square-foot room into the Queen City’s first-ever maker space. When the facility, called Generator, opens on March 29, artists, engineers, programmers and tinkerers will have access to studio space, shared tools and classes on topics ranging from jewelry making to 3-D printing.

“Maker” is the generic term for anyone who embraces new technology to create useful or whimsical objects, and maker spaces have popped up around the world in the past several years. Their organizers aim to give creative DIYers access to the latest technology — and to each other’s energy and ideas — in the hopes of fostering worthwhile projects. The spaces can serve as business incubators, educational hubs or simply venues for community engagement. [Read More . . . ]

  • Photos of our laser cutter

Finally some pictures of Generator’s laser cutter in action! Our Epilog laser cutter arrived late in February and we have been playing with it (practically non-stop) since then. Matthew Thorsen stopped by on Monday and took some pictures of us cutting the Generator logo into a scrap of wood for the Seven Days article:

    Making in progress…

    The finished result:

Even the remnant pieces can be repurposed into something useful!
