Tool and Shop Certifications

Tool Trainings

Tool & shop certifications are open to members and the general public. These classes serve as an introduction to the safe and proper use of a specific tool or shop. Successful completion of a Generator tool training is required for independent access to any of our shops and specialty tools. This includes:

  • 3D Printer
  • Electronics Lab
  • Jewelry Studio
  • Laser Cutter
  • Metal Shop
  • Sewing Studio
  • Vinyl Cutter
  • Woodshop

Non-members who complete a Generator tool training have 3 months to become a member before their certification expires. Non-members who do not join within 3 months will be required to re-take their training.

Tool trainings are different from workshops. The focus is on safe operation and use of our shops and tools, and only basic techniques will be covered. To learn more about a specific, or a more advanced technique please check out our Workshops or request a Private Lesson.

Notice: Tool Trainings are not associated with any professional or industry-level certification status, nor is any document issued upon completion.

Advanced Tool Trainings

Advanced Tool Trainings are specialized certifications—offered by request—that supplement Generator’s standard tool trainings. Each training focuses on a specific tool that requires knowledge beyond what’s provided in our standard trainings in order to be operated safely & effectively.

Tools that require advanced training include:

  • TIG Welder
  • MIG Welder
  • Oxy-Acetylene Torch
  • CNC Plasma Cutter
  • Vertical Mill
  • Machine Lathe
  • Wood Lathe
  • 4-Axis CNC

Advanced Tool Trainings are offered by request only, and most have prerequisites.

When a request for an advanced training is made, the appropriate instructors are contacted to schedule the training. Once a date has been selected, the training will be added to our calendar and opened to other members. This means that advanced trainings are not necessarily 1-on-1, and it may be 3-4 weeks from the time of the request to the date of the training.

If you have questions about Generator’s Advanced Tool Trainings please email [email protected].

Experienced User Assessments (EUAs)

In order to keep Generator safe, we require members to be certified by one of our instructors before using our tools and machinery. Most members are certified by taking one of Generator’s standard or advanced tool trainings.

Generator’s Experienced User Assessments (EUAs) allow individuals with professional experience to bypass our standard certification process by participating in a 1-on-1, in-person assessment with an instructor.

Generator instructors will test the individual’s skills and knowledge and provide additional information and instruction related to Generator-specific safety policies and protocols. This includes how to share and care for tools to ensure community safety.

All EUAs are priced at the same rate as their respective standard shop or tool training and are assessed as Pass/Fail.

To request an EUA use the link below to submit an application. We look forward to getting you certified and using our tools as soon as we can!
