He downloaded the files for this print from Thingiverse and printed it using our line-up of Josef Prusa 3D printers.

When asked why he wanted to make this, Aidan shrugged and said he loved nerf guns growing up and didn’t have anything better to do.

Eva talked to a number of Vermont’s essential workers this week including Kristin Baker, a Nurse Manager in UVM Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

“I did a story on Generator, who made these face shields…” Eva says, “I don’t know if you’ve come into contact with them. Have you seen them out?”

“Yes, we just got them!” Kristin replies. “So these new ones that came in… they wipe down every single aspect. It’s a much more sturdy shield. And so far the staff love it. I think it’s also really cool that is was made locally. There’s also that sense of Vermont pride.”

This is just a teeny part of a longer video capturing the bravery and strength of our frontline workers. Please give it a watch and heed their advice. 450 face shields, 18 intubation boxes, and counting

    [vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][vc_column_text]

We haven’t updated you in a few days — we’ve been moving so fast!

As of today, we’ve delivered 450 face shields to UVM Medical Center. We have another 550 in production to meet their initial request for 1,000 face shields.

We’ve also donated 18 intubation boxes to the following area hospitals:

    • UVM Medical Center (10)
    • Copley Hospital (2)
    • Northeastern Vermont Hospital (2)
    • Central Vermont Medical Center (2)
    • Rutland Regional Medical Center (1)
    • Northwestern Vermont Regional Hospital (1)

“What’s an intubation box?” you ask.

The clear plexiglass boxes are placed over patients’ heads while medical workers intubate them, limiting the ability of the virus particles to spread.

We’re gaining efficiency and removing bottlenecks in our operation every day.

Our production crew’s spirits are high. All of the supportive messages from our community — especially coming from those in the medical field — have helped these guys keep their energy up.

We’re feeding the crew, but if you want to send treats you’re more than welcome. 🍩

We’ve secured enough PETG to keep printing headbands for the time being thanks to the rigorous search and supply chain management skills of our board member, Michael Metz.

Coincidentally, these enormous 10lb spools come in our signature orange. 🤷‍♀️

We can’t believe how many folks responded to our call for Prusas!

Many others offered to loan us a different 3D printer or to print on their machine at home for us.

Each additional printer we get online helps speed up the entire operation, so thank you to everyone who’s letting us take care of their precious printers!

We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve received for this effort, from local politicians reaching out to ask what we need, to artists offering to write a song for anyone who donates $5 or more… it all helps keep this important effort in motion.

We’ve recognized some of our major supporters on this page. Thank you to everyone who has donated.

Generator and some of their medical, educational, manufacturing, and engineering partners are working to immediately start producing equipment including face shields, N95 masks, and ventilators to protect medical professionals on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jake Blend, Generator’s Rapid Prototyping Shop Manager, is leading the effort to create plastic face shields. Blend is utilizing open source designs from a medical devices group that formed online and surged to over 30,000 members in recent months. Engineers, product designers, materials experts, and medical professionals around the world are editing, prototyping, and testing each other’s designs.

Blend is using Generator’s 3D printers to print the headbands, and Generator’s laser cutters to create the transparent plastic face shield.

“We’re working on acceptance with the hospital, which along with the supply chain is the biggest hurdle right now,” said Blend, “We have runners going up daily to [UVM Medical Center] and getting [the face shields] checked out and inspected.”

As of today, March 26, 2020, Blend is working on version 3 to solve 3D print time issues as well as supporting mass-distribution of his designs to empower those with home printers to support this relief effort.

“This is an extremely organized and collaborative effort,” said Generator Board President Dan Harvey. Board member, Michael Metz, and Operations Director, Elliott Katz, are managing the supply chain of plastics and materials necessary to scale production. Metz and fellow Generator board member, Doug Webster, are creating a state-wide inventory of laser cutters and 3D printers. Other Generator board members and staff have created committees to manage safety, sanitation, distribution, and funding for the initiative.

“The goal is to build a network and launch state-wide production once these designs are approved by medical professionals,” said Metz, who estimated that Generator alone could produce 1,000 face shields based on its own equipment and current material supply. He estimated it would take two weeks to get willing manufacturers around the state in production mode.

Generator is working in partnership with the University of Vermont, Beta Technologies, OVR Technologies, and other Vermont businesses and institutions to create other PPE including N95 masks and ventilators. Several Generator members are also sewing cloth masks for the general public to encourage the donation of N95 masks to medical institutions with greater need.

“Generator is working around the clock to connect the dots in our local, regional, and national community of makers, engineers, and material suppliers in order to meet the demands of this pandemic,” said Executive Director Meg Hammond, “While we had to close the doors to our members, students, and community partners and mentees, this effort allows us to put our tools and expertise to work to protect our community. As an incoming Director, I can’t express how impressed I am with our maker community. More than ever, I see the relevance of Generator.”

    Generator is seeking funding to support the initiative from federal, state, and local resources, as well as private donors and foundations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column centered_text=”true” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]

Jake and Kyle won a bid through Burlington City Arts for a permanent outdoor sculpture at the entry to the newly redesigned St. Paul Street, one of Burlington’s “first great streets.”

    Burlington City Arts wrote:

“Pill and Sikora fabricated the sculpture at Generator’s metal shop in the South End and at Arcana Workshop in Barre. The bird is sculpted out of foam, fiberglass, and stainless steel, while the cattails are made of a patinated mild steel with polished stainless steel accents.

The artists worked closely with Artisan Engineering and the City’s project team to design a base that would provide the right support for the sculpture’s 12-17 foot height without impeding the rain garden’s function. This is Pill and Sikora’s second major public art commission locally, the other recently installed in South Burlington’s Cathedral Square development on Market Street.”
