What's the Difference Between a Tool Training, Workshop, etc?

Tool Trainings

Generator tool trainings are intended to provide basic skill and safety training on a specific set of tools at Generator. Permission to use tools at Generator is only granted when a member passes the Skill & Safety Assessment provided at the end of each tool training.

NOTE: trainings are not associated with any professional or industry-level certification status, nor is any document issued upon completion.

Non-Members are welcome to take any tool training or class at Generator but will not gain independent access to tools unless they become a Generator member! People must become a Generator member within 45 days of taking a training for the certification to be valid. Members receive a 10% discount on classes as well as access to shops and machines once they complete the appropriate trainings.

Workshops are longer, hands-on, project-based educational experiences. Participants leave with a finished item, the ability to dream up new ideas in a new medium, and the confidence to operate the equipment independently. We recommend workshops for folks who have zero previous experience with the tools or equipment used in the workshop and want to begin growing their skillset, or for folks who simply want to experience making something specific in a single session!

Experienced User Assessments

If you have prior experience, you may be eligible to test out of a training through a private one-on-one skill & safety assessment with a Generator instructor. Learn more and request an EUA here.
